Σουτζουκάκια με ρύζι

Souzoukaklia

Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs (600g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup (40ml) Italian parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 large onions, finely chopped
  • 1 small head of garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tsp (4ml) red wine vinegar
  • 1 Tbs (15ml) olive oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp (4ml) dried oregano
  • 1/3 cup (75g) breadcrumbs
  • 3 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil
  • 1 tsp (5g) ground cinnamon
  • Salt and Pepper

Step 1 - Make the Souzoukaklia mixture

  • Combine ground beef, garlic, onion, parsley, vinegar, olive oil, eggs, oregano, breadcrumbs, salt and pepper.
  • Mix thoroughly until combined.
  • Refrigerate 3-4 hours.

Step 2 - Form the Souzoukaklia and Saute

  • Scoop 3 Tbs (40g) of the Soutzoukakia mixture and roll by hand into oblong balls.
  • Heat a pan to medium high and fill with oil to 1 inch (3cm).
  • Add the Soutzoukakia, and fry for 2-3 minutes per side until browned.
  • Drain all fat from pan.
  • Remove from heat, cover and set aside.

Step 3 - Make the Tomato Sauce

  • Blend tomatoes, water, oil, cinnamon and pepper. 

  • Add sauce to pan with the Soutzoukakia, heat to medium-high until simmering.

  • Cook for 15 minutes until sauce begins to thicken.

  • Salt and Pepper to taste.

  • Serve over rice and with Tzatziki, Greek Salad and Pita if desired.
